Chapter 11

Soon it was time to eat. The mood changed as Aeris took out three bowls and ladled each with a large helping of soup. And to finish each off he took out a smaller pouch and dropped a sprinkle of salt. Aeris passed them around while Vincent and Jax both smiled and thanked him with an appreciative nod.

Vincent looked down at his bowl and felt the rising steam stick to his face. He took a breath through his nose and smelled the warm, rich scent of meat and spice.

His mouth salivated as he lifted up the spoonful to his tongue. The comforting heat swam down his throat and landed in his chest like a rock in a still pond. His lungs opened up and his blood felt hot again. He exhaled and a cloud of steam came out.

Aeris was still blowing on his first bite, but Vincent didn’t care how hot it was. He shoveled it down, bite after bite.

Immediately Vincent felt the fog rise from his mind. With something in his belly his thoughts turned from sludge to a steady stream of clean water. His heart lifted and the pit of anger was left behind for a sweet taste in the back of his throat and the soft crunch of onion and carrot against his teeth.

Vincent looked up as he heard the sound of trees ahead. He realized he was already halfway through the bowl and decided to savor it more slowly. The noise was two more groups filtering through the forest and into the clearing.

They seemed to be the last ones left. They were ragged and more exhausted looking than Vincent and the others. Both groups had showed up separately, but Vincent watched as they quickly agreed to only make one fire. They worked together to gather wood and start a flame.

But as Vincent ate and watched, he saw a few people walking his way. It was a small section of the group that was at the far left of the field. Around eight of them were walking over but leading the pack was Tekov Kriven, his fiery hair curling around his shoulders.

Aeris looked up and saw them coming. He took in a deep breath through his nose as his lips tightened and he looked down at the bowl in his lap.

Jax noticed Aeris’s reaction, but continued to eat while looking them over.

Tekov came and stopped in front of their fire. He took a moment in the silence to look down at them as they sat on the ground eating. He glazed over Vincent and Jax, not even noticing that both were calmly staring at him. Tekov instead went straight to Aeris.

“Hey Spud.” Tekov said with a grin, showing off a full set of straight white teeth.

Aeris’s head seemed to be locked into a stare directed only at his bowl of soup.

Tekov’s grin grew a little wider, his mouth opening up so his tongue showed. He then leaned in closer over the fire and Aeris’s head.

“Didn’t know
